How do I calculate vocal range?

Subtract the MIDI number of the lowest note from the highest note to get the semitone span, then divide by 12 for octaves. This calculator performs those conversions automatically.

One octave contains 12 semitone steps. The two endpoints may be described as 13 named chromatic pitches when both are counted.

A two-octave comfortable range is useful for many singers, but control, tone, tessitura, and musical expression matter more than a single width target.
