This workflow starts with an M4A audio export. Save it to Files first. Downloading the file alone does not change your ringtone.
Install GarageBand if it is available for your device. Touch and hold its app icon and choose Create New Audio Recording. Switch to Tracks, then open the Loops browser.
Choose Files, then Browse items from the Files app. Find your downloaded audio and drag it into the track. Move the clip to the beginning so there is no empty space before it plays.
Keep the passage within 30 seconds. Return to My Songs, select your project, choose Share, then Ringtone. Enter a recognizable name and tap Export. GarageBand can offer to shorten an overlong project.
After export, choose Use sound as, then Standard Ringtone or Assign to contact. You can also select an installed tone later in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.

Save your own recording or a family message to Files. Import it, remove any waiting time at the beginning, and keep the words intact. Choose M4A and follow the GarageBand workflow to turn the edited recording into a ringtone.
Prepare clearly different clips for family and work calls. Name the tones when exporting from GarageBand, then assign each installed ringtone in the corresponding contact’s settings. This website creates audio files; it does not read or modify your contacts.

An audio file in Files is not automatically an installed ringtone. For the workflow here, import M4A into GarageBand and use Share → Ringtone → Export. Then select the exported tone in Sounds & Haptics.
Keep the chosen passage within 30 seconds for the GarageBand ringtone workflow. This editor blocks M4R exports over 30 seconds. M4A exports do not have that same tool-enforced cap, so check your selection before downloading.
Make sure the audio is saved as an accessible file, not just available inside a streaming app. Protected tracks cannot be used as ordinary audio sources. Browser codec support and device memory can also affect decoding.
Move the selection past leading silence without clipping the first word. Shorten the fade-in, preview again, and test through the phone speaker after installation. This tool does not automatically normalize volume.
